For Phil the most important value in life is music. So whatever he does or wherever he is this means that Phil always finds a connection with music.
He was born in Amsterdam (NL) in 1967.
As a dj, Phil started with spinning his favourite 45’s at school parties somewhere in 1979. The eighties stand for radio stations: In the early eighties he runs a pirate radio station. In the late eighties he joins the Israeli Defence Force Radio station to be a sound engineer.
Returning to Holland in 1990 he starts up his own cd shop (the smallest in the country). In the meantime he picks up dj-ing after a break of two years and starts working as a music-consultant/producer.
One thing you can’t accuse Phil of is musical segregation; his sets reflect his eclectic upbringing, including everything from original jazz to house to soul to hiphop to drum & bass to funk and beyond.
The first time we hear from Wicked Jazz Sounds (WJS) is in 1998 in the format of a local radioshow hosted by yours truly. A year later he starts throwing parties under the WJS banner at different bars in Amsterdam only to establish Wicked Jazz Sounds as a company with business partner Manne van der Zee in 2002. With a collective of djs and talented musicians WJS is best known for its weekly Sunday clubnight in the Amsterdam Sugar Factory and of course for the 7 volumes of the CD compilations by
the same name.
The collective has performed across the country in all the major clubs like Paradiso, Melkweg, 013, Panama, Hotel Arena and Het Paard van Troje. They had successful shows at prestigious festivals like North Sea Jazz, Lowlands, Dance Valley, Eurosonic/Noorderslag, Loveland Festival and many more.
Besides all this is Phil host of the Wicked Jazz Sounds radio show on dutch national Radio 6 Soul & Jazz, every Saturday & Sunday from 4-6pm (CET)
The musical future looks bright for Phil. The combination of talent, ambition and a strong love for music can only bring great things.
